this anthology represents the history and development of the probehead idea. which basically began ten years ago with a compulsion to make music from non-musical gestures, and just manipulate the sounds made by various machines: natural, animal, mechanical, digital etc. The only parameter--if there is one--was to somehow represent something particular about the relationship between the machine and its user. There is no attempt to incorporate narrative structure or meaning here: just reflections upon the compulsive relationship between user and machine. Which is perhaps a meaningful historical relationship anyway, even if the compositions are meaningless.

The probehead moniker is itself derived from a phrase in Deleuze and Guattari, which suggests that the ongoing and iterative interaction of people and machines has meant that we are already well on the way to becoming something other than human. We are becoming a society of probeheads.
